Being an American Essay Contest: High school students can win up to $5,000 for college in this essay contest, which asks students to write about which civic value they believe is most essential to being an American. Last year’s contest drew more than 31,000 essays, and several Central Texas students won prizes. For more information, log on to www.BeingAnAmerican.org. Deadline is Dec. 1.

BookSpring Children’s Artwork Contest: This contest asks children to draw their version of a “Neighborhood of Readers.” The winner receives a $75 gift certificate and art supply basket from Jerry’s Artarama, and hir or her artwork is featured on Read-A-Thon T-shirts. Artwork should be submitted to BookSpring P.O.Box 143147 Austin, TX 78714 or hand-delivered to Hangtown Grill, 701 S Capital of Texas Hwy. Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search: This talent search helps academically talented young people become inspired to learn through exciting educational opportunities (including above-level testing). Kids are formally recognized, praised for their performance, and sent a clear message that continuing to develop their intelligence can be fun and fulfilling. $20-74. Grease Contest: Parent:Wise has a family four-pack of Grease tickets to give away — want ’em to be yours? If so, email us a photo of yourself, your kids, your dog, your toaster —basically anyone or anything— dressed as your favorite Grease character. We’ll draw a winner from among the photos! Jif Most Creative Peanut Butter Sandwich Contest: Does your child (ages 6-12) have an unusual recipe for a peanut butter sandwich? If so, it could earn him or her a $25,000 college scholarship (or one of four $2,500 scholarships). For contest rules, log on to www.jif.com. Entry deadline is Nov. 13.

Kids’ Science Challenge: Kids in grades 3-6 submit experiments and questions for scientists to solve. This year’s topics involve bio-science, sports on Mars and detective science. Winners receive cool prizes — like a trip to Space Camp! For more information, click on www.kidsciencechallenge.com. Contest opens Oct. 1 and the deadline for submissions is Feb. 28, 2010.

Put A Face On Fun Contest: This contest, sponsored by Balloon Time, encourages parents to upload a photo of their children (ages 3-11) for a chance to win a $1,500 college scholarship and a photo shoot. The winning child will be featured on BalloonTime packaging in 2010. For more information, log on to PutAFaceOnFun.com. Deadline is Nov. 15.
