Campfire Celebrates Anniversary with Tree Planting

By:
Kim Pleticha

Just in time for Earth Day, the Campfire USA Balcones Council celebrated its centennial last month by planning 91 trees in Walnut Creek Park.

The group received a bit of help from Tree Folks, the City of Austin, the U.S. Forest Service, Woodsey Owl and Smokey the Bear — who also hung around to enjoy some birthday cake afterward!

Camp Fire’s Teens in Action also helped-out at the event, bringing the total to some 200 volunteers in all, which made quick work of the planting: all of the trees were planted in just two hours!

Keep Austin Beautiful rewarded all of the volunteers with seed packages to take home and create a little beauty in their own backyards.

Camp Fire USA Balcones Council is a not-for-profit coeducational youth organization that provide kids ages 3-18 with opportunities to explore the natural world through outdoor programs. To learn more about Camp Fire USA’s programs for kids and teens, log on to www.CampfireUSABalcones.org.
