It was a fabulous run.
After besting debate teams from Texas to Singapore, the McNeil High School Debate Team reached the quarterfinals of the Bickel & Brewer/New York University International Public Policy Forum.
Then, last month, the McNeil team received an all expense-paid trip to New York City to debate the Henry Clay High School team from Lexington, Kentucky.
There, they met their match.
The Henry Clay team beat McNeil to advance to the finals. (Once there, however, Henry Clay lost to a team from New Zealand; a team from Singapore ended-up winning the $10,000 grand prize.)
Despite the defeat, we want to express a hearty congratulations to the McNeil team! What they accomplished is no small feat, considering that more than 230 high schools representing 40 states and 31 foreign countries registered for this year’s contest.
Members of the McNeil Debate team are seniors Kendra Brock and Matthew Davis, and junior Shery Hu under the guidance of debate teacher George Pulliam.
