Local Students Take Top Honors at National History Day
Knowledge of the past may end-up paving a bright future for two Austin boys.
Jonathan Box, a student at Austin High School, and Winston Collins, of O. Henry Middle School, took top honors in the 31st Annual National History Day competition.
Both boys advanced to the national level after winning top awards in the regional competition sponsored by the LBJ Library and the state-level contest.
The National History Day competition asks kids to research history and present their findings in papers, performances, web pages, documentaries or exhibits. All entries are judged by professional educators and historians.
Jonathon won high honors in the Senior Individual Performance category for his presentation entitled Antitrust: Coping With the Dark Side of Business Innovation.
Winston, meantime, did the same in the Junior Historical Paper division for hi work on The Amazing Innovation of President Theodore Roosevelt: 'Green' Before It Was Keen.
To give you an idea of how competitive this contest was, 45,000 kids from throughout Texas tried to make it to the national level. In all, some 2,700 kids from 50 states, two territories, the District of Columbia, and several other affiliates in foreign countries competed at nationals.
