AFA Teens Volunteer Across America Challenge: The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America challenges teens to log at least 50 hours of service related to Alzheimer’s from May 31 to August 31 and write an essay that reflects on their experience. The winning teen and a runner-up will each receive an iPad. For complete rules and guidelines, visit www.afateens.org. Deadline is Sept. 12.

American Academy of Pediatrics Children’s Art Contest: Kids in grades 3-12 are invited to create an original piece of artwork to correspond with this year’s theme: “My Healthy Lifestyle”. Grand prize winners will be selected in three grade divisions. Prizes include cash awards and a trip to Washington, D.C. Austin Public Library Bookmark Contest: As part of Teen Read Week 2011, the Austin Public Library invites kids ages 9-17 to create a bookmark with the theme “Picture It @ Your Library”. Contests rules and entry forms can be found at any branch of the Austin Public Library, or online at www.connectedyouth.org or by calling 974-7400. Deadline is Aug. 8.

“Build Big” Competition: PBS Kids Go challenges kids to go BIG in creating and building a design. Complete instructions and entry form available at PBSKIDSGO.org/designsquad/contest. Deadline is August 1.

California Dreamin’ Sweepstakes: Enter for a chance to win a trip for two to a live taping of the TV game show Jeopardy! in Los Angeles! Duke TIP 4th and 5th Grade Talent Search: This talent search helps academically talented young people become inspired to learn through exciting educational opportunities (including above-level testing). Kids are formally recognized, praised for their performance, and sent a clear message that continuing to develop their intelligence can be fun and fulfilling. $20-74. My Wonderful Teacher Essay Contest: Learning Express Toy Store hosts this contest to give children a chance to recognize a great classroom teacher. Winning children receive a $200 shopping spree at the store, while the teacher receives a classroom edition of the Jeopardy! Game worth $499. Saturday STEM Academy: Kids in 9th-12th grades are invited to apply for this unique series of science & engineering workshops in which they’ll learn robotics and much more. Young Leaders for Healthy Change: This free, 12-week program challenges high school students to be healthy while also empowering them to become leaders in driving the change for a healthier society.
