A Family Village - Social Media Goes Local

Local website A Family Village re-launched this week on a social media platform, which is a lot of fun!  If any of you used to chat on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) circa 1994, you will find this website has a similar feel.  On A Family Village, you create villages, rather than chat rooms, but the focus is on meeting new people with similar interests.  As an added bonus, it was created for Austin families, so everyone you meet online, you can also arrange to meet up with in real life.  It will be a great tool for forming new playgroups, or just for asking questions of and getting online support from other local parents.

Here's how it works:

  1. Sign up for a free account.
  2. Search for members with similar interests, who have children close in age to your own, or who live nearby.
  3. Make some new friends!
  4. Join an existing village or start your own.
  5. Create events for the people in your village (like playgroup meet-ups or book clubs).
  6. Write your own blog and post it on the site, or read blog posts shared by other members.
  7. Post items for sale in the "Market" section.
  8. Cast your vote in members' polls or create your own.

The best part of signing up for A Family Village today is that it is brand new.  Right now there are only 5 users, so it's fairly likely that you will get the user name you want.  I just created my very own village called "Free Fun in Austin," so swing on by and say hello!
