Carls Snowy Afternoon
A little girl and her loyal dog, Rottweiler Carl, continue their seasonal adventures in this sequel to Carl’s Summer Vacation. Madeleine’s parents leave her with a babysitter while they head to a party at the local pond. Once they’ve left, Carl helps Madeleine get dressed for a romp in the snow while the babysitter is oblivious to their antics. Fortunately Carl gets Madeleine home safe and sound before her parents return. Following Day’s now-familiar format, the book has few words and the lavish watercolor paintings carry the content. The details invite close examination and most children will delight in the drawing of a snowdog and of Carl sledding down a hill. While some parents may find the babysitter’s lack of attention to be disconcerting, preschool children will love the fantasy fun and will especially enjoy being able to “read” the story on their own.
