This is a hip, almost magazine style book filled with stories about girls and young women who have “gone green.” From celebrities, like Alicia Silverstone who discusses her vegetarian diet, to average kids like Abbe Hamilton, a Girl Scout who inspired her troop to reduce waste, the book is chock full of tips and tales. Hirshfield’s subjects also provide practical guides and waste-reducing recipes. The short sections divide into areas for environmental action, including beauty and fashion, animals, food and agriculture, and natural resources. Each page is filled with photographs and illustrations that are fun to peruse and invite casual browsing. An extensive list of websites leads readers to more information and action. While clearly intended for teen girls, adults working with teen groups will also find a wealth of information and ideas for Earth Day and any day.
