February is Black History Month, and parents or teachers looking for good books that approach subjects of African American history and contributions to American society will appreciate this beautifully illustrated book. Gospel music has its roots in slave spirituals and expresses the pain and sorrow, hope and endurance found in faith. Busy pages include a timeline banner that traces milestones in black history, religion, and music over five centuries. Following an explanation of the elements of gospel music, the rhythms and text are described through poetic interpretations filled with cries of "hallelujah!" and "Amen!" Bold colors and a variety of fonts and text colors add to the exuberant spirit reflected in the folk art illustrations. An accompanying CD provides five gospel songs performed by well-known singers like Mahalia Jackson that will captivate readers of all ages making this an excellent selection for classroom and church school use.
