Curious kids ages 5 to 8 will literally devour this encyclopedic book. Divided into seven chapters, which are further subdivided to explore more than 70 topics, children will learn about the human body, cities and housing, history, animals and plants, the world, and even the universe.
Based in part on a companion volume, Smart-opedia, which was published for older readers, the simple, straightforward text is illustrated with richly colored cartoon-style drawings. In addition to presenting information, readers are challenged to “figure it out” and enticed to compare information about themselves and their life with what is presented in the text. Great entertainment that is also enlightening and will keep restless kids busy and encourage further research and learning.
Books Editor Jeanette Larson teaches children’s literature for the School of Library & Information Studies at Texas Woman’s University.
