Today I Will: A Year of Quotes, Notes, and Promises to Myself
The subtitle really explains this book, which is quite different from what readers might expect from the award-winning authors of Maniac Magee or Loser. The dated entries are meant to be read one a day throughout the year and offer inspirational quotes, guidance, and food for thought. Each page begins with a quote from literature that connects to something to think about for the day. While obviously this would be a great beginning-of-the-year gift, the readings are timeless. The publisher markets the book for middle school readers, but the themes (which are broad and include self-esteem, ecology, interpersonal relationships, and more) and the entries (which range from silly to sublime) will appeal to teens as well. A ribbon marker helps keep your place and the universality of the material means that the book will be read over and over for many years.
