A little girl is eager to learn, but becomes discouraged when she discovers she’s is in the second-to-last reading group at school. Her disappointment causes her to avoid reading in class, but she doesn’t share her struggle with her parents. Her parents, of course, discover what’s going on and have a heart-to-heart with her, explaining that everyone learns at a different pace and that it is important to work hard and keep trying. The author does a good job of understanding and portraying the little girl’s feelings, and the message delivered by the parents is both positive and motivating. While the book is particularly well suited to children who are having difficulty in school, it is an important lesson for all children to learn: we all go at our own pace and that’s OK.
