We know it may seem almost criminal to review a fleece baby carrier cover when it’s so darn H-O-T out, but someday (hopefully!) winter will arrive and this thing will come in handy. Made from 85% recycled, Oeko-tex Standard 100 Polartec fleece (which means it is certified to pose no health risk), the Peekaru is designed to be worn over a front-style baby carrier, like a Baby Bjorn; it will not work with a sling. You slip the Peekaru over your head like a sweatshirt, then pull it over your body and your baby. When we reviewed the Peekaru back in November 2010, we complained that the hole for the baby’s head wasn’t big enough. That problem seems to have been remedied with the latest model: the head opening is both good-sized and has a nice little stand-up collar to keep baby’s neck warm. And boy is this thing warm! We became mighty toasty testing it in an air-conditioned office, so we can well believe the company’s suggested wearing temps of 55-degrees without a coat and 20-degrees with a coat are accurate. Because the Peekaru is worn like a piece of clothing, you must purchase a specific size when buying it. We tested a size medium, which is designed for women who wear a size 8 or 10, and found it to be true-to-size. Because the Peekaru comes only in women’s sizes, men will need to size-up (the company offers sizes up to 3XL), and even then we aren’t sure the Peekaru will fit guys appropriately. Not to be picky, but we’d really love it if the company installed a zipper down the entire front of the Peekaru. That way we wouldn’t have to pull it over our heads when wearing a baby — something that really does require three hands!
We’re required to tell you that all Cool or Crummy items are sent to us by companies and PR agents; we do not purchase these items independently, they just show up on our doorstep. All items are tested by our Product Review Team, otherwise known as the Tester Mamas, who have children in the age ranges recommend by the items in question. As you can see, we’re brutally honest in our reviews so it should go without saying that we do not accept payment for product placement (but we have to say it anyway because this is, after all, a required legal notice).
