This "mission", called Assignment 1001, had our kids assume the roles of a forensics team to the local police department, investigating the case of counterfeit video games. With an "open first" case file, the kids knew what they were trying to do, and why. And yes, they loved it! Recommended for ages 8+, the our 11-year-old tester girl took the role of the “lead scientist” as we followed the well written instructions.
The task was simple enough for us adults to feel like experts, yet difficult enough for the kids to feel like they were doing real science experiments. The kids spent 90-miniutes engaged in the game (well, OK, the 8-year-old wandered off to build Legos while the 11-year-old worked on some of the more difficult tasks the game presented). Still, the game definitely met our standard of quality time/play for the price. All game supplies were of excellent quality — things we will keep and use again for other science-related activities. So here’s an idea: lead Grandma to the site, show her the 3three-set bundle package (and all of the other cool science stuff — lab coats, microscopes, you name it) and perhaps Santa will skip the extraneous battery-operated, obnoxiously loud toy and go for the brain toy instead!
We’re required to tell you that all Cool or Crummy items are sent to us by companies and PR agents; we do not purchase these items independently, they just show up on our doorstep. All items are tested by our Product Review Team, otherwise known as the Tester Mamas, who have children in the age ranges recommend by the items in question. As you can see, we’re brutally honest in our reviews so it should go without saying that we do not accept payment for product placement (but we have to say it anyway because this is, after all, a required legal notice).
