Giving birth is an amazing experience. Sure it's long, painful and exhausting but hey: that's not what you think about when you look at your kids, right? Same deal with a magazine.
This month marks the first issue of Parent:Wise Austin -- a journal by Austin parents, for Austin parents. Getting this thing out was an awful lot like childbirth -- except the labor lasted a heck of a lot longer. Luckily, it wasn't painful at all. That's because we have an amazing crew working on this magazine -- most of them mothers who are doing it while taking care of their kids. We wanted to create a space for people to be parents and professionals. So we made Parent:Wise Austin a child-friendly, breast-feeding friendly, parent-friendly workplace. Heck, we've even been officially certified by the state of Texas, no less, as a Mother Friendly Workplace!
But I digress!
What I was saying is that the folks working on this magazine are dedicated to its mission: to create a warm, informed community through thoughtful articles, essays and humor. We also have the best family events calendar we've ever seen -- hey, we like play, too.
This magazine is your magazine. I can't stress that enough. We want to build a community of thinking parents who enjoy smart and lively discussion about issues that affect us — as parents and as people. We have a web page designed to facilitate community, including bulletin boards, a listserv, book reviews and, coming soon, a forum to rate professional services around town. Please take a look and tell us what you think: www:ParentWiseAustin.com
Before I let y--all get to reading this great magazine, I have to heave a huge THANK YOU to Nisa Sharma, the brains behind the magazine’s beauty; Rebekah Maaz, sales executive exemplary and extraordinaire; and Brian Stankiewicz, amazing husband/web master/IT guru/photographer/fix-everythinger. Also a huge thanks to our columnists and writers: the fabulous Digna, Jenny, Lynn, Nayana, and Ruth. There simply aren’t enough adjectives to levy on these people: suffice it to say that, without 'em, the magazine wouldn't exist.
It also wouldn't exist without our advertisers. Please: support these businesses whenever you can -- and be sure to tell them you saw their ads in Parent:Wise Austin.
So happy birthday to us -- here's to a long, happy and adventurous life!
